Emerge New Work Festival
July 20 to 25, 2009
Various Venues, Leeds

As part of the Emerge New Work Festival, in association with Script Yorkshire, SY Chair Dan Bye, will be conducting two workshops, details of which are below:

Beginning to Write
Tuesday, July 21, 2009; 1pm to 3pm
In this workshop, you will gain some specific tools and approaches to putting pen to paper, whether as a brand new writer or an experienced professional looking for refreshment. In particular, we'll focus on developing character and shaping story. We'll also look at the potential uses of a dedicated writer in a devising process.

The Readthrough
Saturday, July 25, 2009; 11am to 1pm
Carriageworks Theatre, Leeds
This panel discussion looks at different perspectives to performing text through the lens of the first readthrough. What is the readthrough for? What are you looking to achieve? Is it really of any use? And what other models are there? On the panel will be a writer, an actor, a director and one or two others, each of them leading industry professionals.

For more details and information on how to register for the workshop, write to members@scriptyorkshire.co.uk.

Script Yorkshire Branch News:

Upcoming Branch Meetings are as follows:

SY BRADFORD

Our Snowgoose Theatre Writing group meets every two or three weeks, at the Royal Pub on Great Horton Road, Great Horton, Bradford. The group alternates teaching and sharing sessions to enable writers to consider various concepts about writing for stage and to share their work and get feedback from others. The final session will be held on July 14, 2009.
For further details please contact Jonathan Hall at hall_jonathan@hotmail.com.

SY HULL

The last branch meeting was held on June 10 at Hull College, with Dave Windass, conducting a workshop that focussed on creating characters. A proposal to launch the “New Voices Festival” on February 9, 10, and 11 was discussed, where every member could produce a 10-minute play, monologue, radio script, etc, which would be performed by the drama students from Hull College. Further details of the event will follow shortly.
The next branch meeting will be held at Hull Truck Theatre on July 7, 2009 at 7pm. For further information get in touch with Lin Whitehouse at whitehouse26@whitehouse26.karoo.co.uk.

SY SOUTH

To attend the regular branch meetings at Sheffield or to know more about events planned in the future by the SY Sheffield branch, get in touch with Charles Thomson at active@annihilation.wanadoo.co.uk.

SY YORK:

Script Factor
The recent Script Factor event held on June 15th witnessed a good turnout, with a nail-biting finish. In the end, it was a tie between “Ordinary Joe” by Ged Cooper, and “Passing Through” by Helen Shay. The two winners will share recording space, on the York Theatre Royal website, with Sara Murphy's Family Tree. This professional recording session comes courtesy of Damian Cruden, Artistic Director of York Theatre Royal. Julia Pattison has also written an excellent review of the event in Pocklington Post, to be published online shortly.
Script Factor is an opportunity for you to give your feedback, vote on your favourite play and enjoy an evening of new writing in the intimate studio theatre.
We're anticipating two more Script Factor events: one in September & one in November. For more information, please contact Ged Cooper at gedcooper3@yahoo.co.uk
